To earn money in order to attend law school, Mr. Shadowen spent nine months working in a pickle factory. In recognition of his college degree, he was given a job in “central juice,” i.e., making the pickle juice. On particularly exciting days at work, he also made mustard. Returning home from the “graveyard shift” (4 p.m. to 4 a.m.), his clothing reeked so badly that his parents required him to change clothes in the garage before entering the house. He has not eaten a pickle in the last 29 years.
