Biography
Matthew Hamermesh's practice covers a wide range of litigation and bankruptcy work.
Matt has extensive experience in general and business litigation, including substantial appellate experience in civil, bankruptcy and criminal cases. He has been recognized repeatedly as a Super Lawyer - Rising Star in the area of appellate litigation. He has also conducted both jury and bench trials, as well as numerous smaller hearings and arguments.
In his bankruptcy practice, Matt has represented debtors, creditors and committees in bankruptcy court proceedings, litigation and various business transactions.
Matt is also active in pro bono work representing clients in a wide variety of cases, including death penalty defense, prisoners civil rights, bankruptcy, and uninsured tort defense.
Matt is an active member of the Philadelphia Bar Association and the Eastern District of Pennsylvania Bankruptcy Conference, an organization devoted to the improvement of the practice of bankruptcy law in and around Philadelphia. He is an active participant in the Bar Association's Appellate Courts Committee. He served as Chair of the Young Lawyers Division of the Conference for three years. He has also served extensively on the Conference's Education Committee.
Matt graduated from the University of Michigan Law School magna cum laude in 1998. In law school, he served as an article editor for the Michigan Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif. He received his B.S. in Mathematics from Yale University in 1994. After law school, he served as a law clerk for the Honorable Edward R. Becker, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, after which he joined the firm.
Matt practices in the firm's Philadelphia and New Jersey offices. He formerly served as the firm's hiring attorney.
