Environmental Group chair Steven Miano presented at the State University of New York (SUNY) Conference for Master Teachers on Friday, August 4, 2023. He discussed “Environmental Disasters that Led to Environmental Laws,” covering the history of environmental laws in the United States. Steve covered how certain disasters led to laws such as the Clean Water Act and the Clean Air Act, as well as current environmental issues that are prompting legislators to act. He also touched on issues surrounding the Love Canal, the Cuyahoga River and the Donora smog, and more recent issues including pollution problems in the Gowanus Canal and in Onondaga Lake.
