A New Jersey family’s backyard pool project was recently halted when state environmental officials determined the property included protected wetlands, despite the family having already secured local permits. The situation highlights the complexities homeowners can face when local and state regulations intersect.
Shareholder Steven Miano spoke with CBS3 News Philadelphia about the permitting confusion and the importance of due diligence before starting construction projects in environmentally sensitive areas.
Now, nearly two years since the family’s pool project started, they’ve spent $150,000 on the renovation, and their backyard is still a construction site.
“If you’re going to do a construction project like that, you should have somebody look at the property and tell you, I don’t think there are wetlands here,” Steve commented. “It’s an extra expense, but to do that upfront is a lot cheaper than having to do what these guys are now having to do.”
