A decade after the U.S. Supreme Court declared marriage equality a fundamental right, former Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis petitioned the justices to revisit Obergefell v. Hodges. On November 10, the Supreme Court denied her request, providing relief to many, though the broader discussion about LGBTQ+ protections is far from over. 

Shareholder Rebecca Levin Nayak spoke with the Philadelphia Gay News about where marriage equality stands today, what families need to know and the importance of remaining proactive and informed. 

“If the Supreme Court was to revisit marriage equality, this really didn’t seem like the right case for that issue,” Becca explained. “It’s a relief that the Supreme Court didn’t use this opportunity to revise marriage equality.” 

Becca also emphasized the importance of continued engagement. “I think we should be doing what each of us can to be educated and advocate and be politically active. It’s really important to continue to do that and work also on whatever state protections that we can get.”
